ALPACA FLEECE
I only use natural fibers when I do needle felting.
I will be trying out all different kinds of natural fibers so watch this space to see what I use next…!
Today I will be working with Alpaca fleece.
Alpaca fleece is the natural fiber harvested from alpacas. It is soft, luxurious and silky. While similar to sheep's wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic.
There are 2 alpaca breeds : Huacaya and Suri
The Huacaya alpaca has a shorter, dense fleece, it is “teddy bear like”, while the Suri fiber is longer, it is silky, more shiny and has “pencil like” locks.
I love working with alpaca fleece. I must admit though, I prefer using the Suri because of it’s soft and silky feel.
There are sixteen basic solid colors of alpacas with various shades in between.
White, Beige, Fawn , Brown, Bay Black, True Black, Rose Grey, Silver Grey, to name but a few!
So…now I wonder, what shall I make with my alpaca fleece… if you’re thinking “an alpaca” , then you are 100% correct!!
I am going to make an alpaca using alpaca fleece…so that makes my alpaca, 100% alpaca.
